Pinion Memento

In land they bring different things with them,
a holiday at Balbec, a lover in Hastings,
the fear of storms carried in too far

reaching whatever heartland you inhabit today.
Last time I saw them flatten out,
showing off, areodynamic as MIG fighters

was above Pere-Lachaise as I sat with my back
to Oscar, cigarette ploughed into styrofoam
and again before the mighty Marcel, respectable in Black.

You kept it up, bickering all over the sky,
screams bouncing off granite, coarse enough
to turn widows from their lonely tasks,

that day you brought me who knows when
as a well thumbed gift. Picked up true scavenger style
from the part of me designated land fill.
