L. Ward Abel

Summersoak

Always return to the rain I do,
it mimics the great interior expanse
of my wet cavernous soul.
There's me at the window,
blinds ajar. Beyond the pane
the outside creeps backwise
searching, floodwaters finger, sheeny.
At this moment,
a great desire to disrobe
and stand out under it all
is diverted
by so-called better judgment.
So the oilskin watch-act
suffices.

Presence

Claire was a nursing student
early twenties-old and Welsh
lived in south London near Clock House station,
one evening over brandy
out in the garden speckled green and gold
summer sun still fringing that sky
she told me in calm demeanor
that the little people were all around us,
though she hadn't seen one since pre-puberty
when sadly one loses that sense
to see fairies
all bathed in light
over by the rock walls of our youthful heed.
