Deirdre Clancy

Killykeen August

Elizabeth listens to Laurie Anderson
and the other two are asleep.
Tonight I walked down
by the lake before dinner
as the sun prepared for slumber.
One orange-gold bar streaked
across the sky
and a flock of birds
silhouetted across it.
Sitting on my rock
I saw them reflected
perfectly in the Buddha-still lake.
Later at dinner
we complimented the cook
on her secret sauce
and organic pasta,
then, playing sevens and
eating chocolate and crisps,
for no particular reason
Sonya kept saying the word "arse".

Sometimes I love this life,
when the sacred balance between
stillness and silly laughter
is weighed
to perfection.
