Neville Keery

Toledo

I

Screeching swallows threaten
The grey, brown, and gold
Of slate, tile, and stone
In the early light.

Spindly aerials mock
The gothic spire
On the cathedral
With breaking news.

II

In 44 degrees
A GI patrols
A Baghdad street
Fighting the heat
In boots, fatigues,
Helmet and bullet-proof vest.

In 38 degrees
I patrol
The city walls
Fighting the heat
In sandals, shorts,
Straw hat and shirt.
