John Martin

Happiness

What makes a man happy ...
the unexpected smile at the door,
the expected delivered or not,
a child's sick cough held tight
in the middle of a tired night,
winning, losing or both,
staring into the face of the abyss
and smiling and crying all at once,
gold and silver, mucky boots,
cherished foresight visions of truth,
people pushed in chairs
or those who push,

... the abomnible melts with the smallest fire,
hatred served by love.
