Jason Rawn

1642 Bourbon St

Stale smoke clouds the crowded room.
I watch people drink their social remedies
as the band plays their sorrowful tunes.
Small candles on the tables toss shadows
across distant faces painted bruised blue.
I used to come here to drink away worries
watching others swim in their own ruin.
Everyone has their own remorseful stories.

I take a drink of my Long Island Tea
as the white haired black man blows
on his saxophone. A bent-backed lady,
permed hair--gray, plays a soft melody
on her old piano. Drunk and slow,
I lean back just watching, quite happily.
